The walls whisper the dreams and aspirations that once filled the air, now mere echoes of a past long gone. "Forgotten Layers" tells the tale of a place that was once full of life and hope, now reduced to a haunting beauty of decay and abandonment. Spokane was founded in 1890 to extract precious gold, but the mine proved richer in silver, copper, zinc, mica, and graphite. The remains of Spokane are 16 miles from Custer, just north of Custer State Park's northern border, and a short walk from Forest Service Rd 330. As you walk through the decaying corridors, you can almost feel the weight of the memories that linger in the peeling wallpaper and exposed wooden planks. Each layer of paint tells a story of a family's love and laughter, now faded and worn with age. The graffiti on the walls is a stark reminder of the more recent struggles and hardships that have befallen this once-thriving community. The town hit its stride in 1927, its biggest year ever, totaling $144,742 in profits, which helped fund the school building, whose bones can still be found for the time being. Even from 2010 to this past year, this structure has started to fall. Its many holes and aged wood now provide a lot of fun for photographers. By 1940, the mine and town were all but abandoned. The light filters through the broken windows, casting shadows on the remnants of a life left behind. You can't help but feel a sense of sadness and loss as you explore the crumbling rooms and forgotten corners. The beauty in the decay is bittersweet, a reminder of the fragile nature of existence and the impermanence of all things. "Forgotten Layers" invites you to reflect on the passage of time and the inevitable cycle of birth, growth, and decay. It serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of cherishing the present moment and appreciating the beauty that can be found even in the most forgotten and neglected places.
